Oly (his studio). Oly's studio (by his account) gets messier and messier as a project goes on, so mess is part of his process. We intially started by ramping up the mess and hiding him in the mess until he draped one of his tapestries over himself and the final image suggested itself.
Peter (The London Library). We tried a lot of different shots and settled for one looking through the bookshelves. The books are about Ruskin, who is a central character in the novel Peter is currently writing.
Ryme (Dance Film Performance). We did several slow shutter speed shots; I also tried out some shots with another dancer holding a light which I didn't use but informed the shoot with Mel.
Sally (at home). This was quite a cramped shoot. The final image was actually shot via a large mirror that covered one wall.
Thea (Ashton Court). None of the pictures in this shoot seemed to hit the vibe of the book and so didn't get used. We had a reshoot planned but ran out of time.
Zoe (Bristol museum store room). We shot a lot here with the museum staff helpfully moving round the taxidermied animals which we couldn't touch because of toxic chemicals used in their preservation. Zoe was very taken with conch shell which belonged to William Golding and can legitimately be called the original for the one in Lord of the Flies!
I made a version of the 'big QR' that used dark/light images from the book. Didn't like it and went for the simple, classic look.
